Spot the pressure before the scam

Urgency tries to take away the time you need to check a story.

Look for the pattern

An unexpected message claims authority, creates a problem or prize, pressures you to act, and asks for money or sensitive information. The story may resemble a real employer, bank, delivery company, or relative. Familiar branding and caller identification do not establish who is contacting you.

Use an independent route

Pause and contact the organisation through an app, website, or number you already know or independently verify. Do not use the link or telephone number supplied in the suspicious message. A request to share a login code or move money to keep it safe deserves immediate suspicion.

If you have already paid or exposed an account, contact the payment provider or bank promptly through a trusted channel and follow its recovery process. Report through the relevant local authority and your workplace security team when applicable. Keep useful evidence, but do not continue interacting merely to investigate. Feeling embarrassed is understandable; quick practical action is more useful than blame.

A worked example

A convincing message, a separate check

A message says, “Payroll must be reverified in ten minutes or your salary will stop.” Instead of opening its link, use your employer’s known payroll portal or a previously verified HR contact. The short deadline is a reason to slow down, not evidence that the request is genuine.

Illustrative numbers, in consistent units.

One thing to try

Save the trusted contact route for one bank or workplace service. Practise where you would go after a suspicious message.

A quick checkUnderstand it. Then use it.

An urgent bank message includes a number to call. What is the stronger verification step?
