Catch the costs that quietly renew
Small recurring charges deserve a place in the plan, too.
Turn a monthly price into a decision
List recurring charges with their amount, renewal date, and cancellation method. Include annual subscriptions and trial periods. A low introductory price may change later, and stopping use of an app does not necessarily end its billing. Check the actual terms before relying on an assumption.
Decide what earns its place
Annualise a monthly charge by multiplying by twelve, then compare it with how much you use the service. The annual figure makes repeated commitments easier to see; it does not make a useful subscription inherently wasteful. Watch for overlapping services or fees for features you do not need.
If you cancel, retain the confirmation and check subsequent statements. An unexpected renewal message can also be a scam: reach the company through an address you independently know. Cancellation rights differ by jurisdiction, so this lesson makes no universal legal promise about refunds or how cancellation must work.
A small charge with a long tail
Three subscriptions cost 8, 12, and 15 per month. Together that is 35 monthly and 420 over twelve months, assuming unchanged prices. If only the 12-per-month service is unused, cancelling it frees 144 per year after any valid notice period.
Illustrative numbers, in consistent units. One thing to try
Review one recent statement privately. Record three recurring charges and set a reminder before one renewal.
You deleted an app with a paid subscription. What should you check?
