Global football / Champions League preview

Atlético vs Bayern Preview: Kane Eyes Champions League Record

Harry Kane arrives in Madrid one scoring appearance short of a Champions League record. For Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid, however, the immediate priority is improving a European campaign that has left both clubs outside the top eight. Their meeting offers an individual milestone, meaningful points and a test of how each side handles the other’s strengths.

What record can Harry Kane match?

Kane has scored in his last ten Champions League appearances, UEFA’s match briefing confirms. A goal in an eleventh successive appearance would draw him level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s competition record. Bayern’s separate statistical preview dates Ronaldo’s run to 2017–18. The milestone concerns consecutive appearances, rather than eleven goals in one game or a single-season scoring total.

Atlético have a strong home record to place against that run. UEFA records ten wins in their last 12 home group-stage or league-phase matches. They are also unbeaten in three previous home Champions League meetings with Bayern: two wins and a draw. Those results span different squads and seasons; they offer historical context rather than a forecast for this match.

Why the league-phase points matter

Both clubs’ official previews put Bayern in 14th place with five points and Atlético in 16th with four before matchday four. An Atlético victory would move the hosts above Bayern on points. A Bayern victory would create a four-point gap between them. Neither outcome alone determines where they finish in the wider table.

The top eight finishers advance directly to the round of 16; teams placed ninth through 24th enter a two-legged playoff. Four league-phase games will remain for each club after this one. This is an opportunity to strengthen a campaign at its halfway point, with qualification still decided across the full eight-match schedule.

Bayern opened with a 5–0 win against Bodø/Glimt, then drew 3–3 with Viking and 2–2 with Arsenal. Atlético lost at Liverpool, beat Manchester United 2–0 and drew 1–1 at Stuttgart. Neither side has assembled consecutive European wins this season, and Bayern’s two draws show why scoring repeatedly has not translated into maximum points.

Confirmed team news, without guessing the lineup

Bayern list Jamal Musiala, Luis Díaz, Serge Gnabry, Ismael Saibari and Bara Ndiaye as unavailable. Manuel Neuer and Michael Olise travelled with the squad, but travelling does not confirm a starting place. Assistant coach Aaron Danks again deputises for Vincent Kompany, who is ill, according to the club’s match preview.

Atlético’s official call-up page includes Koke, Álex Baena, Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth among the options available to Diego Simeone. That is a squad announcement, not a starting eleven. It is the appropriate reference for selection updates before the teams are formally named, rather than treating a predicted formation as confirmed news.

What to watch: Farvenzo’s tactical reading

For Bayern, the useful question is what happens after an attack breaks down. Their recent European draws make control without the ball as relevant as chance creation. Watch whether they can sustain pressure while leaving enough cover to stop Atlético turning a regain of possession into a direct attack. This is a tactical question, not a claim about the formation Danks will choose.

For Atlético, the corresponding challenge is turning defensive work into threatening possession. Winning the ball is more valuable when the next pass creates room to advance. Spending long spells protecting their own penalty area would leave fewer opportunities to test Bayern. Kane’s record chase adds a sharp individual focus, but the collective contest is about which side can make its attacks count without losing control behind them.

For a shorter example of Kane’s scoring run, TNT Sports hosts a 53-second archive clip of his equaliser against Viking on 13 October. That earlier game finished 3–3.
