Do YouTube Shorts Watch Hours Count Toward Monetization?

Watch hours from the Shorts Feed do not count toward YouTube’s 4,000-hour long-form eligibility threshold. Shorts have a separate qualifying-views route.

Two routes, two different counters

YouTube’s eligibility page, checked on 24 October 2026, lists 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. These are alternative routes for the stated ad-revenue eligibility threshold, not quantities you can combine.

YouTube excludes Shorts Feed watch hours from the 4,000-hour route. Availability, channel policies and application review also matter. Reaching the numbers is not automatic acceptance. Earlier-access features in eligible markets have separate requirements; do not confuse those with full advertising eligibility.

Why a watch-time total can mislead

Imagine a creator whose dashboard shows 700 hours across a mixture of short and long videos. That total alone cannot establish progress toward the long-form requirement. The useful question is how much activity qualifies for the specific programme counter, during its specific rolling window.

A second creator might earn most new subscribers through Shorts while building public long-form viewing through tutorials. Shorts can help people discover the channel, but discovery does not convert Shorts watch time into qualifying long-form hours. The audience benefit and the eligibility calculation are different questions.

Plan around the content, not a conversion formula

Start with the channel’s purpose. A quick demonstration may suit a Short; a complicated explanation may need a longer video. Connect related formats when it helps viewers, and inspect whether people actually continue to the other content. Do not assume every Shorts viewer wants a lengthy follow-up.

A practical tracking sheet needs separate columns for the Earn-tab counters, the date checked, subscriber count and the videos that brought returning viewers. This keeps a viral spike from dominating the business decision. More uploads are not automatically more useful if they reduce originality or leave the audience confused.

Keep current rules and future notices separate

At the time of checking, YouTube’s official eligibility page also displays a notice about updated terms taking effect on 1 February 2027, with acceptance requested by 31 January 2027. Those dates are future dates relative to this article’s source check. Read the official notice and the channel’s Earn tab before making a plan that extends into 2027.

The action today is simple: open YouTube Studio’s Earn area, identify which counter you are following and read the requirements shown for your channel. Use Analytics to understand the audience; use the programme-specific eligibility counter to assess application progress. Avoid unofficial shortcuts or promises that a particular view count guarantees income.
